UT San Antonio — Undergraduate Student Employee Eligibility

Undergraduate students must meet the following academic eligibility requirements to hold a student position:

  • Must be in academic good standing.
  • Must be enrolled in a recognized educational institution on a half-time or greater basis during the current or next scheduled semester.

Please note, TA status does not change resident status for tuition purposes.

Department of Mathematics — Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (Math Gym Tutor) Eligibility

In addition to the UT San Antonio academic eligibility requirements, the following requirements apply for the Department of Mathematics.

  • UT San Antonio Department of Mathematics Major or Minor.
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty member.
  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty or staff member.
  • At least sophomore standing.
  • Grade of B or higher in Calculus I.

Departmental Exceptions: The Department of Mathematics reserves the right to make exceptions to the eligibility criteria or priority order above. All exceptions are made at the discretion of the department.

Deadlines

Completed applications for the Spring semester are due by October 15th. Completed applications for the Fall semester are due by April 15th.

Selection Process

Candidates for Undergraduate Teaching Assistant positions will be required to complete an interview process. This will include a skills test which covers content through Calculus I including the concepts of derivatives and their applications. The assistantships will be granted based on performance in the test and recommendation of the committee. Once the selections have been made, you will be notified by email.

Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (Math Gym Tutor) Duties

Prior to the start of each long semester, Undergraduate Teaching Assistants are required to attend and participate in Collaborative Training. This takes place the week prior to classes starting and it is mandatory to be eligible to work.

This is an hourly position that allows students to work up to 19 hours per week. All Undergraduate Teaching Assistants can expect to be required to work a minimum of 15 hours in person on campus in the Math Gym or assigned lecture. There will be required in-person weekly Professional Development meetings which typically take place on Friday afternoons. Depending on the needs of the department, an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant may be assigned additional duties.
