Dr. McCarrey received his Bachelor's degree in Animal Science and Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Genetics, all from the University of California, Davis, and completed postdoctoral training with Dr. Susumu Ohno at the City of Hope Research Institute in Duarte, California.

Appointments, Honors & Awards

Dr. McCarrey joined the faculty in Reproductive Biology at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in 1986. In 1991, he moved to the Department of Genetics at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research in San Antonio, Texas, and in 2001 he assumed his present position as Professor of Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. McCarrey was named the Robert and Helen Kleberg Distinguished University Chair in Cellular and Molecular Biology in 2012, and holds joint appointments in the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Cell Systems & Anatomy at UT Health San Antonio. He is also an Affiliate Scientist of the Southwest National Primate Research Center in San Antonio, and an Adjunct Professor in the Center for Reproductive Biology at Washington State University. He is the Director of the San Antonio Cellular Therapeutics Institute, the Head of the Cell & Molecular Biology Section of the Department of Neuroscience, Developmental and Regenerative Biology at UTSA, and the Graduate Advisor of Record for the UTSA PhD program in Cell & Molecular Biology.

In 2015 Dr. McCarrey was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Society for the Study of Reproduction (SSR). He was inducted into the UTSA Academy of Distinguished Researchers in 2016, and received the Distinguished Andrologist Award from the American Society of Andrology (ASA) in 2018.
