UTSA's Extreme Environment Materials Laboratory (EEML) – PI: Dr. Elizabeth Sooby – is a 2000 sq ft radiological materials laboratory dedicated to the high temperature synthesis and thermal analysis of uranium bearing and other high temperature intermetallic compounds with applications in the energy sector.

Dr. Sooby has developed the current capability since 2017, acquiring the initial space, 570 sq ft, at UTSA’s main campus in August of 2017. The radiological work permit for the EEML was approved in February 2018, and initial funding to support advanced fuel research was awarded in the form of an industry contract in April 2018. Since then, the facility has been supported by several additional federal grants and industry contracts.

The laboratory supports the work for 8-14 student researchers at any given time, ranging from undergraduate to postdoctoral. We love to collaborate, and have several active collaborations within academia, national laboratories, and industry.
