Audrey LambAudrey Lamb, Ph.D.

Professor and Chair, Department of Chemistry

Dr. Audrey Lamb is a professor of chemistry at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Dr. Lamb received her bachelors of science in chemistry from Furman University in 1993, her doctorate in biochemistry at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1998, and performed postdoctoral studies in biochemistry at Northwestern University. She was hired as an assistant professor in the department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Kansas in 2003 where she rose through the ranks to full professor in 2015, and served as interim dean of graduate studies in 2019. Dr. Lamb moved to UTSA in 2020 to become the Chair of the Chemistry Department.

The research of Dr. Lamb's laboratory focuses on understanding how bacteria cause disease in humans for the development of effective therapeutics. Her lab studies how human pathogens biosynthesize metallophores, molecules produced by bacteria to scavenge required metal ions from the environment, including the human host. The lab also studies how Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) is made by human pathogens. In both cases, the lab uses mechanistic enzymology and structural biology to investigate the enzymes of these biosynthetic pathways, which are targets for the design of new antibiotics. Dr. Lamb also has collaborative projects related to cancer, diabetes, and SARS-CoV-2, among others. She has received funding from numerous sources, including the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the American Lung Association, and the W.M. Keck Foundation.

Dr. Lamb has run regional and national meetings, including the Midwest Enzyme Chemistry Conference and the Enzymes, Coenzymes and Metabolic Pathways Gordon Research Conference. In January of 2024, she will serve as co-chair of the Enzymes Mechanisms Conference. She is currently an elected council member for the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Dr. Lamb was elected as a 2022 Fellow for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Dr. Lamb's first love is inspiring young minds in the sciences, and she has mentored many undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. Indeed, she is an award-winning teacher and mentor at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
