UTeachSA is modeled on the very successful UTeach program first developed in 1997 at the University of Texas at Austin and is designed to address specific educational problems facing the state.

Texas school districts struggle to find qualified STEM teachers and there is a pressing need to recruit, train, and retain math and science teachers. In order to meet this need, UTSA has partnered with the UTeach Institute to replicate its outstanding teacher preparation program.

Built on the successes of the UTSA GE2MS Teaching Program, UTeachSA is a secondary STEM teacher preparation program produced in collaboration between UTSA's College of Sciences (COS) and College of Education and Human Development (COEHD).

UTeachSA was created to attract a wide range of science and mathematics majors into secondary teaching careers. By offering compact degree plans, early teaching experiences, guidance by expert master teachers, and financial assistance, UTeachSA provides a platform for raising the quantity and quality of math and science teachers in secondary schools.
