About the Program
The UTSA Tuggle Scholars Program is dedicated to mentoring and training graduate students who aspire to become leaders in environmental science and ecology. The program provides interdisciplinary support for students through a variety of research, writing and science communication activities that develop students' ability to communicate their expertise to a range of audiences, via a range of media.
Tuggle Scholars are nominated by professors in their field to work alongside researchers from UTSA departments of Integrative Biology, English, and Education Leadership and Policy Studies, as well as government and industry leaders from a variety of environmental and ecological fields.
The UTSA Tuggle Scholars program is administered through the College of Sciences Department of Integrative Biology, with funding provided by a grant from the National Science Foundation National Research Traineeship Innovations in Graduate Education (NSF NRT-IGE).

Benjamin Tuggle, Ph.D.
Former Assistant Director for Science Applications, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Dr. Tuggle's prominent career began in 1979 at the National Health Research Center in Madison, Wisconsin. Since then, he has held key leadership positions within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), including a wide variety of field experience and time in the agency's Washington, D.C. headquarters. He served as the Service's Regional Director for the Southwest Region from 2005-2017 before serving as the Assistant Director for Science Applications at USFWS until his retirement. Dr. Tuggle continues to be actively involved with the Tuggle Scholars at UTSA, who benefit from his expertise, networks and knowledge.
