IMSD at UTSA Application

Eight new IMSD at UTSA trainees will be admitted each fall, one per participating PhD program that maintains its commitment to diversity, and one for an exceptional candidate in any of the programs. Applications for IMSD at UTSA are accepted in late fall to early spring.

Applications will be reviewed and ranked by the IMSD at UTSA Student Selection Committee prior to the April 15 doctoral decision deadline. Additional selection sessions will be held as needed to fill all positions.

Applications will be reviewed in late April; please submit ASAP.

Application Requirements

• U.S. citizen or permanent resident
• From a group recognized as underrepresented in the biomedical sciences
• Committed to begin training in a participating PhD program in the upcoming Fall semester
• Will perform doctoral thesis work in the biomedical or behavioral sciences
• Committed to completing doctoral training at UTSA
• Will participate in IMSD at UTSA training for three years, unless another source of funding is secured

Application Materials

The online application will request the following:

• Permission to view your UTSA application and materials.
• Any transcript that has been updated since you applied to UTSA.
• Your updated CV (not resume)
• Describe in detail your "deepest" and most encompassing research project that you had responsibility for and how it impacted you.
• Short paragraphs covering the following:
  • What motivates you to earn a PhD
  • Why you wish to participate in IMSD at UTSA
  • What are your greatest concerns about starting your PhD
  • Describe current/future contributions to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Summarize your long-term goals, addressing career path and postdoctoral plans
  • Other relevant information for our selection committee
