Teaching Philosophy

Our teaching philosophy is centered on cultivating intellectual curiosity and sustained engagement with microbiology by immersing students in authentic scientific inquiry. We aim to create a laboratory environment in which students not only acquire technical competencies but also develop enthusiasm for experimental design, data interpretation, and problem-solving.

Emphasis is placed on fostering independence, encouraging students to think critically, troubleshoot methodologically, and identify and evaluate primary scientific literature as a foundation for evidence-based reasoning.

This approach is closely aligned with the mission of the Antimicrobial Compound Discovery Center (ACDC) within the MMI Department at UT San Antonio, where research-driven education is integrated with efforts to address the global crisis of antibiotic resistance.
