Physics Students Launch High Altitude Balloon

The Flight of the ICARUS

Members of the UTSA chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) launched the Inflatable Collection of Atmospheric Reconnaissance for Unfunded Science (ICARUS), a high-altitude balloon containing experiments designed and created by SPS students to collect various types of data testing the effects of environmental extremes at high altitudes near the edge of space. An on-board computer collected experiment data and an on-board camera recorded a continuous video of the flight, monitored the experiments, and provided a breath-taking view of Earth from 100,000 feet. Three and half hours into the flight, the balloon reached its maximum height and burst; the payload fell back to earth with the aid of a parachute. | Video recording by Dr. Bryan Tobias
