Thank you for your interest in the RISE PhD program. After a long run at The University of Texas at San Antonio, the RISE program has ended. We celebrate our students and their accomplishments and will continue to seek out ways to support the highly talented and dedicated future scientists at UT San Antonio.

The NIH/NIGMS-funded RISE (Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement) program was designed to assist underrepresented students to attain their doctoral degrees in the biomedical and behavioral sciences.
The RISE PhD program supported 20 students toward obtaining their degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Developmental & Regenerative Sciences, Molecular Microbiology & Immunology, Neuroscience, Physics, or Psychology. RISE trainees were selected competitively and received financial support, mentoring, travel funding for conferences, professional development and leadership training, and instruction in grant writing. It is our mission to assist our students to develop as exceptional leaders and researchers and launch into successful careers in biomedical or behavioral sciences.
To launch into a successful scientific career, a doctoral student has to personally mature in a variety of ways, complete degree requirements, and create the "Products" of science. The RISE Program worked with students and mentors to assist our students in creating strong credentials. The federal government dictated that RISE doctoral students could receive a total of five (5) years of graduate funding. Any RISE funding as an MS student counted towards these five years.
Throughout their studies, students and mentors provided feedback regarding their performance via Fall and Spring online evaluations. In addition, RISE PhD students were evaluated by the RISE Student Selection and Retention Committee prior to the beginning of their third, fourth, and fifth years of study.
