Seth Fremin, Biochemistry Major

By Ryan Schoensee

Meet Seth Fremin, a biochemistry '25 senior at UTSA from Houston, Texas. After earning an associate's degree in chemistry from Lone Star Community College, Fremin transferred to UTSA in fall of 2022 as a junior to pursue his bachelor's degree in biochemistry.

Fremin developed a passion for science and math ever since high school which led him to studying biochemistry, a field that integrates fundamental physics with the biological processes of living organisms.

"My major is challenging but incredibly fascinating," said Fremin. "I find the coursework deeply engaging and I truly appreciate how the UTSA faculty dive into complex topics with great depth."

Shortly after transferring to UTSA, Fremin joined the Medicinal Chemistry Lab led by Oleg Larionov, the Robert A. Welch Distinguished University Chair in Chemistry, and is currently involved in several research projects. Fremin has co-authored four scientific publications. His favorite research project was published in ACS Catalysis, where he analyzed divergent triplet acridine-catalyzed silane-oligosulfide HAT excited state reactivity using Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT).

Last year, Fremin completed a summer research internship funded by the National Science Foundation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he made research contributions to the field of medicinal chemistry.

"UTSA has been instrumental in supporting my academic journey," said Fremin. "The College of Sciences promotes a strong culture of student engagement in research labs, which has enabled me to develop a broad range of skills essential for the biotech industry while deepening my understanding of core biochemistry principles."

Notably, the Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) program has played a key role in Fremin's growth as a scientist, providing him with financial assistance and offering annual professional development training. With the help of RISE, Fremin has had the opportunity to present his research at conferences at UTSA and internationally, which has enhanced his networking and communication skills.

"I have grown significantly in every aspect of my academic career and am incredibly grateful to Dr. Edwin Barea-Rodriguez, Dr. Aaron Cassill, and Dr. Gail P. Taylor [from RISE] for providing invaluable guidance throughout my undergraduate studies," said Fremin. "This program has offered substantial financial support for my research, which has been immensely beneficial. In addition to the funding, my public speaking and writing skills have greatly improved since joining the RISE program."

Fremin's advice to science students is to be prepared for a challenging yet rewarding experience, be open to learning across multiple disciplines, don't hesitate to reach out to professors or join study groups, and stay persistent when times are difficult. He also encourages new students to take advantage of research opportunities early on as they'll connect what students learn in the classroom with real-world applications.

"Embrace your college experience without regrets," added Fremin. "Follow your curiosity and stay committed to learning. Aim high, and don't be afraid to explore new, challenging areas, even if they push you out of your comfort zone and create some uncertainty."

After Fremin graduates next year, he plans to pursue a Ph.D. in organic chemistry, with the goal of establishing or contributing to a research lab in academia.
