Kelly Ruperto

Kelly Ruperto, Biology Major

By Ryan Schoensee, Senior Communications Specialist

Meet Kelly Ruperto, a senior from Lampasas, TX, who is majoring in biology in the College of Sciences. Ruperto chose UTSA because of the university's rich diversity and welcoming environment, which she first encountered after touring the Main Campus as an incoming freshman in fall 2019.

"UTSA is constantly working to grow its diversity by supporting new ideas and initiatives that help students from all backgrounds feel welcome and included," said Ruperto. "I believe this makes UTSA stand out compared to other universities."

Ruperto chose to major in biology because she wanted to do something related to the medical field. Science was something she was always interested in and Ruperto believes a biology degree will provide a strong foundation for almost any medical profession. Her favorite class at UTSA is Anatomy and Physiology with Eddie Hernandez, associate professor of instruction for the Department of Integrative Biology.

"Biology is an interesting program but there are times when it can be strenuous," said Ruperto. "However, with consistency and dedication, sooner or later your hard work will begin to pay off."

Faculty and staff from the Department of Integrative Biology at UTSA have always been there to help Ruperto throughout her academic journey. Whether it was a teaching assistant guiding her through a challenging chapter or a professor demonstrating patience and care, Ruperto is grateful for their support as mentors.

Ruperto is also thankful for her peers and the work they've shared, "I've been fortunate to be paired with amazing lab partners in every lab course I've taken at UTSA," said Ruperto. "I really enjoy working with my group members. At the end of a semester, it is always a bittersweet moment to say goodbye because of all we've accomplished together."

During her time at UTSA, Ruperto has joined several on-campus organizations and student clubs. These include the Pre-Physician Assistant Society, the Hispanic Student Association, and VOICES, the largest volunteer organization at UTSA. She's also currently working as a complex assistant for UTSA Housing and Residence Life where she supervises the front desk staff at Alvarez Hall, the newest residence hall at the UTSA Main Campus.

Ruperto is currently participating in a research experiment led by David Jaffe, professor in the Department of Neuroscience, Developmental and Regenerative Biology. The research project is investigating pain and how it is transmitted through the dorsal root ganglia, which carries sensory messages from various neural receptors across the body to the central nervous system. This experience allows Ruperto to contribute to a real-world problem, as it could lead to developing a new therapeutic control for pain.

After she graduates, Ruperto plans on applying for physician assistant schools and acquiring more experience working in the medical field where she can make a difference by diagnosing and treating diseases.
