Shannon Janssen, BBA, Research Administrator III, COS Research Administration Team

What did your journey to UTSA look like?
I started working at UTSA in August 2008 in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts as a Grants and Contracts Coordinator in the Dean's office (until reorganization and had another position in the same office). In 2018 I moved to the Biology Department to learn more in depth administrative duties as the Management Analyst. In 2020, I moved over to the COS BSC and that was an extension of the position in Biology continuing to work with faculty, staff, and students which I enjoy tremendously and still do to this day in my current position still within the College of Science as a Research Administrator III. I enjoy working with the faculty submitting research proposals to continue research in many areas from medical breakthroughs to learning more about space and what could be out there!

How would you describe your role at UTSA in 10 words or less?
I support the mission and goals of UTSA and COS by coordinating with the PIs to submit their research proposals by making sure that they are following the sponsors guidelines to secure research funding.

What is your proudest moment with the College of Sciences?
My proudest moment in the college is providing excellent customer service in an effort to show that the college is there to help everyone meet their goals. This happens especially when the PIs are appreciative that they have received their grant funding and acknowledge my work with them with a thank you.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy working with faculty and assisting them with the submission of their proposals and absolutely enjoy hearing about when they've been awarded the funds. I feel like in some small way I have helped them get their grant funds to continue their research.

What does your ideal Saturday look like?
My ideal Saturday is taking a little road trip out into the country or to the ranch and take photos of things that spark my photographer eye. Enjoying the wonders and beauty that are given to me. A nice dinner with my family and ending with a relaxing evening at home with a movie.
