Vero Salazar, Program Coordinator, COS Student Success Center

Please tell us about yourself.
I've worked at UTSA since fall 2019. I got my start in Academic Success Coaching before joining the COS Student Success Center as a Program Coordinator. My partner, Victor, also works at UTSA at the Student Union and I have a 6-year-old son named Gus. I am originally from San Marcos and attended Texas State University where I earned my BA in English and MEd in Student Affairs and Higher Education. My college experience was so transformative. I learned a lot about myself, the world around me, and fostered friendships with people from different places. I often tell my students I loved college so much, I never left!

What did your journey to UTSA look like?
Most of my higher education experience is rooted in working with University Housing and Residential Life programs. I was a Residence Hall Director at Northeastern University in Boston, Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and The University of Texas at Austin. I am so grateful for my time at these institutions. It has allowed me to become a well-rounded practitioner.

How would you describe your role at UTSA in 10 words or less?
I help Science Mentors' outreach efforts to support student success.

What is your proudest moment with the College of Sciences?
Seeing the growth of the Science Mentoring program since it started fall 2021 to now, is my proudest moment. We've come so far; our COS students know about us! I feel we've created a space where students can feel a part of something. It's wonderful to see students use the SSC, attend our events, and meet with our Science Mentors. We really are trying to develop a community of scientists.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love working with student leaders! It's amazing to see them enhance their skills and develop a sense of confidence. I also feel it keeps me young! I learn so much about new music, trends, and slang words each day.

What does your ideal Saturday look like?
I love hanging out with my family. You can find me at the Rim, hitting up my favorite stores: Target, Home Goods, and Ross. I love a good deal! When I'm at home, I'm either watching my latest binge-worthy show on Netflix or taking care of my plants.
