Endowed Chemistry Chair Selected as Co-Chair of International Enzymology Conference

By Ryan Schoensee

On Thursday, August 1, Aimin Liu, endowed chair and professor in the Department of Chemistry, was elected as one of two co-chairs at the upcoming 2026 flagship Gordon Research Conference (GRC). This is a prestigious honor and service to the enzymology community, as this is one of only two major international conferences in this field.

Additionally, Liu will serve as a co-vice chair of the next Enzymes, Coenzymes and Metabolic Pathways also hosted by GRC, which will take place in Waterville Valley, NH in July 2025.

Liu has previously elected to organize and chaired the 40th Southeastern Magnetic Resonance Conference in 2011 (SEMRC 2011), and served as a Discussion Lead, Session Chair, and Symposium Chair at various American Chemical Society (ACS) and GRC conferences.

"Being elected as the next GRC chair is a tremendous honor and a reflection of our lab's dedication to advancing enzymology and protein structure-function studies," said Liu. "I look forward to contributing to the continued success and innovation of this community."

Liu's research career spans over 20 years and has been well-supported by the NIH, the National Science Foundation, the Welch Foundation and other funding agencies. His expertise includes biosynthesis, enzymology and protein biochemistry. Liu leads the UTSA Metalloprotein Research Laboratory, which specializes in investigating how biomolecules use metals to perform chemistry necessary for life.

Audrey Lamb, professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry, served as the previous co-chair at a 2016 GRC meeting.

GRC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building communities that advance science and hosts conferences that bring a global network of scientists together to discuss the latest pre-publication research in their field.
